Strategies for overcoming procrastination

Here are the 10 powerful strategies for overcoming procrastination and increasing productivity – basically for getting more done.

Learning about and implementing these types of things have helped me tremendously to create a better life for myself and to feel better about myself. And, I hope they help you too!

1. Understand the root causes of procrastination

I believe there’s power in knowledge, so the first thing we’re going to talk about here is what causes procrastination. If you can understand the cause, then it’s a lot easier to change it.

Procrastination can be caused by different things, like fear of failure, the relentless pursuit of perfection, and a lack of motivation. I think most of us have had feelings like this at some point!

Fear of failure can leave us feeling paralyzed and not taking action, as we worry about not meeting our own or others’ expectations. And, this fear can be so powerful that we delay starting a task altogether to avoid the potential disappointment.

On the other hand the quest for perfection can create a psychological barrier, making us believe that if we can’t achieve perfection it’s not worth doing at all. And, this mindset can lead to postponing tasks until we feel we can execute them flawlessly.

(I’ve personally struggled with this one! And, one thing that helps me is to remind myself that no one and no thing is perfect. Plus, it’s better to get it done than to strive for doing it perfectly.)

We can also be affected by a lack of motivation that can arise from a lack of interest in the task, burnout, or feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of the work ahead.

I know that all of this can feel overwhelming, but now that you’re powered with the knowledge of why you procrastinate you can overcome it. Now, let’s look at the other nine procrastination tips that’ll help you!

2. Break tasks into smaller steps

One strategy for overcoming procrastination involves breaking down seemingly daunting tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. And, this really helps!

If you have a large project, the mere thought of tackling it as a whole can trigger overwhelm and lead to procrastination. But, when you divide tasks up into bite-sized portions you make it more approachable.

And, each step completed becomes a victory that propels you forward!

But, these smaller steps are not just about getting things done – they’re powerful strategies for overcoming procrastination. They provide a clear roadmap that reduces uncertainty and intimidation.

For instance, if you’re working on a research paper, you can divide the process into researching sources, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. And, this will turn the project into a series of achievable milestones.

With this method, you’ll set yourself up for consistent progress and avoid the procrastination that often comes with larger tasks.

Of all of these strategies for overcoming procrastination, this one is a game-changer!

3. Set specific & achievable goals

When trying to beat procrastination and increase productivity, it’s important to set clear and achievable goals. And, these goals will guide your actions and fuel your motivation!

Setting goals with deadlines establishes a sense of urgency that compels you to take action rather than falling into procrastination. You’ll have a sense of purpose and direction (which is important), and you’ll be taking actionable steps that make a difference. And…

To truly harness the power of goal-setting, consider the SMART framework:

  1. Specificity ensures that your goals are well-defined and leave no room for ambiguity.
  2. Measurability allows you to track progress and celebrate milestones.
  3. Achievability encourages realistic goals that motivate rather than overwhelm.
  4. Relevance ensures that your goals align with your overall objectives, giving them meaning and purpose.
  5. And lastly, time-bound goals set a deadline, creating a sense of urgency and accountability.

By weaving the SMART criteria into your goal-setting approach, you not only combat procrastination but also infuse your journey with structure, focus, and an unwavering commitment to success!

4. Prioritize tasks using the Eisenhower Matrix

The Eisenhower Matrix is a powerful tool and holds its own among great strategies for overcoming procrastination, as it offers a straightforward approach to task prioritization. (I’ve found this one quite helpful!)

Dividing tasks into four quadrants – Urgent and Important, Important but Not Urgent, Urgent but Not Important, and Neither Urgent nor Important – this matrix empowers you to allocate your time and energy wisely.

By focusing on tasks that align with your goals and carry a sense of urgency, you prevent the trap of spending excessive time on tasks that offer little value.

Utilizing the Eisenhower Matrix cultivates effective decision-making, ensuring that the most pivotal tasks take precedence and supporting your journey towards enhanced productivity and task management.

James Clear has a wonderful article on The Eisenhower Matrix (or Box), and he does a fantastic job at describing where this idea first came from and different ways to use it. I definitely recommend checking it out (after reading the rest of these tips)!

5. Use the Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique, a time-tested strategy for overcoming procrastination, centers around focused work intervals and short breaks.

You work diligently for a predetermined period, usually 25 minutes (a “Pomodoro”), then take a 5-minute break. And, after completing four Pomodoros, you take a more extended 15-30 minute break.

(I’ve been finding this VERY helpful, especially when I’m struggling with focusing!)

This approach combats procrastination by breaking tasks into manageable chunks and leveraging the power of concentration bursts.

And the Pomodoro Technique also boosts productivity, as the short timeframes enhance focus and reduce the inclination to delay tasks.

By embracing this technique, you’ll make time your ally. You’ll be minimizing distractions and maintaining a steady pace of progress along the way!

6. Practice the Two-Minute Rule

Embrace the Two-Minute Rule, a motivational strategy for overcoming procrastination and igniting action.

With this one, if a task requires less than two minutes to complete, you tackle it immediately. (And, this is a great habit to develop anyway!)

This simple, yet impactful, rule combats the tendency to delay small tasks that can accumulate and hinder productivity.

By swiftly addressing these quick tasks, you create a sense of accomplishment and momentum that propels you into more significant tasks with renewed energy.

And remember…

Every small step you take today sets the stage for greater achievements tomorrow.

Abundant Life & Balance

One of my favorite YouTubers has a go-to phrase she uses saying something like “little bit by little bit, a little bit becomes a lot”. And this has helped me so much, getting me to keep working on things a little at a time until I get it done.

So embrace the power of the Two-Minute Rule and watch as your progress accelerates, conquering procrastination one task at a time!

7. Create a distraction-free environment

Picture this: a sanctuary of focus, where your ambitions take center stage and distractions fade into the background.

Crafting a distraction-free environment is your secret weapon in the battle against procrastination. So, clear your workspace of clutter, silence the notifications, and designate your time for focused work.

By creating this haven you’re sending a powerful message to your mind, and you’ll get more done. Imagine the satisfaction of tasks completed without the constant pull of interruptions.

I’ve recently discovered how to set up a “focus session” on my computer (Mine is in my clock app.) It silences notifications while I work, keeps track of how much I’ve worked for the day, and best of all allows me to set small intervals of work time and breaks. Loving it!

So, let’s embark on this journey to reclaim your space and unleash your potential. Your future self will thank you for the strides you’re taking today!

8. Use positive reinforcement

Another thing that’ll help you beat procrastination and increase productivity is positive reinforcement

It’s a wonderful strategy for overcoming procrastination that includes celebrating small victories and appreciating progress.

Treat yourself to a cup of your favorite tea after finishing a challenging task, or take a stroll in the park as a reward for meeting a deadline. By acknowledging your efforts, you’re creating a cycle of motivation that fuels your journey.

Remember, your accomplishments deserve recognition, and YOU deserve to revel in the joy of your achievements.

So, while trying to conquer procrastination, let positivity be your guiding star and focus on becoming a more empowered and productive you. You’ve got this – one step at a time!

9. Implement the “Eat That Frog!” approach

Ready to flip the script on procrastination? Then try the “Eat That Frog!” approach by Brian Tracy, a bold strategy that challenges you to tackle the toughest task first thing in the morning

I personally think this is one of the best strategies for overcoming procrastination that’s listed here. But, then again I love Brian Tracy’s books and teachings – they’re filled with wisdom & very inspirational!

So go ahead, take a bite out of that daunting frog. Your future self will thank you for the leap forward into a more empowered, productive, and fearless you!

10. Cultivate a growth mindset

When it comes to strategies for overcoming procrastination, your mindset is your secret weapon.  So try to have a growth mindset – a transformative approach that sees challenges as opportunities and setbacks as stepping stones.

This, too, has changed my life. And, I believe it’s because how you see things changes everything.

We are often unaware of how our viewpoint or thinking is affecting things, but when you try to see things in a different way you can quickly see the difference it makes.

Embrace the belief that your abilities can be developed through effort and learning, and the fear of failure will lose its grip. Every stumble will become a lesson, every task an avenue for growth.

Abundant Life & Balance

With a growth mindset, you’re not just tackling procrastination; you’re unlocking a mindset of resilience, courage, and determination.

So when those moments of doubt creep in, remind yourself that you’re not just learning to conquer tasks – you’re evolving into a stronger, more capable version of yourself.

With this mindset, the journey to overcoming procrastination becomes a path of self-discovery and empowerment!
