On one hand, life is too short here to not be enjoying our lives. And on the other hand, it’s too long to go through it feeling miserable or unfulfilled. Either way you look at it, it makes more sense to enjoy the lives we’ve been given as much as we can.

But, it’s easy to get in a rut where you’re kind of just going through the motions and aren’t really enjoying life. I think we’ve all been there.

And with all the complaining some people do and how miserable they seem to be, it seems more the norm to have occasional happy and content moments and to usually just be getting through the day. But, how sad is that.

We can do better, and our future selves that’ll look back at the lives we’ve lived will thank us for it. So, let’s take a little time to find what brings us joy and peace and work on creating it, because it’ll be worth it.

What does “live a life you love” mean?

“Live a life you love” means something different to everybody, because when you think of this different things will come to mind than when I think of it. And, that’s why it’s important to determine what this means for you.

What is your ideal life? What does it look like? What does it make you feel? These are important questions to ask yourself to get a clear vision of what you want to create.

You might even want to journal as you answer these life questions and go through this process. Sometimes it helps.

Here’s a list of 20 ways to live a life you love, starting today!

#1 Start each day with gratitude

Adding more gratitude into your life will always improve your life or add to it in a positive way.

The more gratitude and other positive feelings you hold, the less negative feelings and thoughts you’ll have room for. So begin your days by acknowledging and appreciating the good things in your life, and do this at other times as often as possible.

Gratitude and positivity have changed my life for the better, and I can’t say enough how incredibly transformative it is. It might sound simple, but it’s so helpful. And at times when you don’t know what to do, just listing some things that you’re grateful for can start to turn things around.

#2 Set goals that excite you

It’s important to have passions and things to look forward to in life. In fact, it’s so important that some people who have none of this start to feel depressed and hopeless. So, don’t fall into that rut!

Life is meant to be truly lived, and we’re meant to find joy in it. Think of what you’re passionate about, about what excites you and calls to you, and do more of it.

And, have something to work toward. This can be so powerful that it gives you a reason to get moving every morning. (Although, the gratitude practice from number one will help with that too.)

Define what you want to achieve and create a plan to make it happen. And once that’s achieved, find something else to work toward. This will always keep you improving your life, or staying excited about life, so you can live a life you love.

However, don’t forget to be present and enjoy the moment (or the journey along the way). This is SO important! You won’t be happy if you’re constantly just going through the motions and looking forward to tomorrow. It’s a balance.

#3 Surround yourself with positive people

We’ve all been around people that bring us down, that put us down, that don’t leave us feeling so good. And, I can’t say this enough. Take care of YOU and do what’s best for you. And, don’t feel guilty for it.

Protect your energy. If it feels like someone is draining you, it’s because they are! It isn’t in your head. Everything is energy, we are affected by energy, and it’s essential that we recognize this and take care of ourselves.

If this sounds complicated or like too much for you, then just think of it as positivity vs negativity. Spend time with those who uplift and support you. Spend time with those who leave you feeling good afterward, rather than the opposite.

Yes, there might be times when you feel you must be around negative people who make you feel bad. But, just do your best to protect yourself and then to uplift yourself afterward. Share less if you have to. Keep it short if you need to. Excuse yourself if you choose to.

#4 Practice self care regularly

It’s important to have balance in life. You can work hard at things and give to others, but you must give back to yourself as well. Your well-being depend upon it.

You don’t want to get run down (and have more time down) because you didn’t give enough attention to your well-being, to how you’re feeling and what you’re needing. So, how are you feeling? What do you need?

Make time for activities that nourish your body, mind, and soul (even if these are separate activities). Take time to do things that give back to you, that restore your energy and your morale (lift you up) and refresh you.

#5 Step out of your comfort zone

To start living a life you love, you’ll need to step out of your comfort zone. As the saying goes, nothing changes if we don’t change. So, embrace the new!

Challenge yourself to try new things and to grow. Think of that list you made of the ideal life you’d like to have (if you didn’t do it, you can do it now), and think of what it entails. There are probably some things needed for it that are new and might involve stepping out of your comfort zone a little.

#6 Spend time in nature

Nature is therapeutic and so beneficial to be in. But, it’s easy to forget this and to take it for granted. Let’s not.

Make time to appreciate and enjoy nature. Let it give back to you and restore you!

When you’re in nature, it can feel like you’re getting closer to your own spirit. (This is because everything is connected.) It can also feel like you’re getting closer to God or the Universe (or whatever higher power you believe in), and it can make you literally feel better.

So, enjoy nature regularly and enjoy life.

#7 Learn something new

People who are living lives that they love are probably regularly experiencing new things and growing. So if you want to live a life you love, make sure you’re doing this.

Keep your mind engaged and curious by acquiring new skills or knowledge. Don’t be afraid to try new things – this is one way that we enhance our lives. Keep an open mind, ready and willing to learn, improve, and grow.

#8 Forgive yourself & others

Too much unforgiveness, bitterness, and regret can weigh us down. So, do the work to release this baggage.

Right now, imagine something that’s weighing on you, perhaps something you’ve held onto for a while that occasionally brings up negative feelings. Now, imagine that this issue (or issues if you want to think of more than one) have been put into a backpack that you’re carrying around. It’s weighing you down. It’s holding you back. Now, envision yourself taking the heavy backpack off, setting it down, and walking away.

And, breathe. Don’t you feel so much lighter now? It’s similar to what I like to do, which is imagine I’m putting all my troubles into my hands and handing them over to the Universe to take care of for me.

This frees up your mind and energy and gives you a fresh start!

#9 Practice self acceptance

If, like many people, you’ve had people in your life that didn’t show you unconditional love and acceptance, you now need to give it to yourself.

Let me say it again. You need to give yourself the things that others wouldn’t or couldn’t give you that you needed as a child or at other times in your life.

This is very healing and freeing. And, it’s a very important part of the self growth process.

If needed, work on self love and self acceptance. Celebrate what makes you different and don’t compare yourself to others. We’re all unique, and we all have the right to be ourselves and to love ourselves.

#10 Live in the present moment

We touched on this one in number two, but it’s important to practice mindfulness and fully experience and appreciate each moment. This can be life changing and will definitely help you live a life you love!

Here’s something that might help.

To start practicing mindfulness, (1) focus your attention on the present moment without judgment, (2) acknowledging thoughts and feelings as they arise and (3) gently guiding your attention back to the present when it wanders.

If you notice that you’re not being present and/or are allowing yourself to be controlled emotionally by outside circumstances, it can help to find things in the present moment to appreciate or be grateful for. (This has helped me tremendously!)

  • Help others: Volunteer your time or lend a helping hand to those in need. Doing something for others or thinking of others gives us a feeling of purpose, fulfillment, & making a difference.
  • Simplify your life: Declutter your physical & mental space to make room for what truly matters. This helps the energy in your space, helps you feel better, & brings more peace & focus.
  • Do activities for your body, mind, & soul: (1) Engage in regular physical activity to keep your body healthy & your mind clear (perhaps journal). (2) Use a planner for notes & plans to free up space in your mind. (3) I also recommend meditation of some sort, for your spiritual fulfillment & peace.
  • Express yourself creatively: Use art, writing, music, or other forms of expression to tap into your creativity. Creative expression is very important for us as spiritual beings, & helps us in many ways.
  • Practice mindful tech use: Limit screen time & use technology in a way that enhances your life. Balance is important for living a fulfilling life, so make sure you’re doing things without screens too.
  • Celebrate your successes: Speak kindly to yourself, encourage yourself, & acknowledge & celebrate your achievements, no matter how small.
  • Seek adventure: Step out of your routine & explore new places & experiences occasionally.
  • Nurture your relationships: Invest time & effort into building & maintaining meaningful, healthy connections. This is something we need, & it feeds our souls & adds something special to our lives.
  • Set boundaries: Protect your time, energy, & inner peace by saying no to things & people that don’t align with your values whenever you can. This includes those that drain you & make you feel bad.
  • Listen to your inner voice: Trust your instincts & make decisions that feel right for YOU. Have confidence. If interested, I highly recommend learning to hear your inner voice or higher guidance better.
