Life’s too short not to live the way you want, so today we’re talking about how to grow as a person & become who you really want to be. But, growing as a person is a journey that requires self-reflection and intention.

So, in this post I’ll give you twelve steps that you can easily follow to become the best version of yourself.

12 steps to becoming the best version of yourself (who you really want to be):

  • Identify the areas of your life that you want to improve
  • Set goals & create a plan to achieve them
  • Create actionable steps to move toward your desired outcome
  • Take time to focus on your mental, physical, & emotional health
  • Exercise, get enough sleep, & eat a balanced diet
  • Do things that bring you joy & remind you of your worth
  • Develop a growth mindset
  • Be open to feedback & constructive criticism
  • Get outside of your comfort zone
  • Take risks & don’t be afraid to fail
  • Take time to reflect on your progress & celebrate your successes
  • Most importantly, be kind & patient with yourself!

The last one is important, because how you treat yourself or talk to yourself will have a lot to do with how far you go (or how long you keep going toward your dreams). And, remember that this is worth the effort, even though it’s an ongoing process.

You deserve to have the kind of life you really want to have, and you can totally make it happen through self-growth.

I’ve never heard of anyone who regretted working on themselves to improve their lives.

Now, let’s take a deeper look at these twelve steps for growing as a person and becoming who you want to be!

How to grow as a person through reflection

One of the first things on our list of how to grow as a person refers to reflection, because you can’t change or improve on anything that you don’t notice or acknowledge. But once you DO put focus on it, you become powerful!

You become capable of creating the life you want, once you’ve become clear on how things are, how you want them, and what you don’t want.

So, don’t skip this step! It may be a beginning step (although not really, because there will be times in your life that you’ll want to do it again), but that doesn’t mean that it’s an unimportant step.

Identify areas of life that you’d like to improve on

One of the best ways to identify the areas of your life that you want to improve on is to reflect on your daily activities, both positive and negative.

Think about what you can do better to enhance the quality of your life. Consider areas such as relationships, work, finances, physical health, mental health, and hobbies.

Then once you’ve identified the areas that you’d like to focus on, you can brainstorm ideas for how to make those changes.

And, don’t worry. We’ll cover setting goals and actionable steps toward them in a minute.

Set goals & create a plan to achieve them

Setting goals and creating a plan to achieve them should become an important part of your life now. Trust me, it makes all the difference! So, let’s look at how to best do this.

To get started, first you need to identify what your goal is. And once you’ve done that, it’s time to create a plan of action:

  • Start by breaking your goal down into smaller, achievable steps.
  • Make sure that each step is realistic and can be completed within a reasonable amount of time.
  • As you work on your plan, don’t forget to set milestones so you can track your progress.
  • And, make sure to evaluate your progress and adjust your plan as needed.

With a clear goal and an actionable plan, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your goal!

To become who you want to be, you must take some action

In order to become who you want to be, you have to take some action. The life that you want isn’t going to just fall in your lap.

Now, that doesn’t mean that the Universe won’t help you out, it just means that you need to walk toward what you want as well.

Oh, I used to hope and dream about the life I really wanted. But, the problem was that that’s about all I did! I wasn’t taking much action at all toward that dream life.

It’s as if I thought if I was meant to have it, it would just come to me and fall into my lap. But, that thinking is so wrong! We must DO something. We must show our power and our belief in ourselves and what’s possible by taking action toward it.

So, believe in yourself enough to do something little everyday that’ll help you get to where you want to be. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Just do SOMETHING.

And, if you need help believing in yourself I have lots of blog posts on this site that can help you with that! I’m big on this, because it took ME a long time to start really believing in myself. But I saw that once I did, I felt so much stronger and better.

Create actionable steps toward what you want

When creating actionable steps to move toward your desired outcome, it’s important to start with the end goal in mind. Here’s some helpful tips:

  • First, ask yourself what you want to achieve.
  • Then, break down the steps to get there (to what you want).
  • Identify what resources or tools you might need & the timeline for completing each step.
  • Establish measurable goals & milestones along the way, and monitor your progress to stay on track.
  • Don’t be afraid to adjust your timeline or add or remove steps as needed.
  • Finally, be sure to celebrate your successes & take the time to reflect on any lessons learned.

With these tips, you’ll have the actionable steps you need to move toward your desired outcome (toward what you want).

And, you’ll be on your way toward growing as a person and having the life that you really want for yourself!

Take time to focus on your overall health

Taking time to focus on your mental, physical, and emotional health is so important!

It’ll help you to be your BEST self, and you wouldn’t be reading this if you didn’t want that. So let’s look more at how to grow as a person, but by focusing on your overall health this time.

There are many different ways to prioritize your wellbeing, such as:

  • getting adequate rest
  • eating a balanced diet
  • exercising regularly
  • & engaging in activities that bring you joy!

Taking the time to do these things can help you feel more energized and balanced, both mentally and physically. This can also help you to reduce stress and anxiety, which is so important.

Additionally, talking to a friend or family member, or even a professional, can help you to process your emotions and learn healthier coping strategies.

I personally also believe in journaling and talking with my higher guidance (to you that could be God, the Universe, spirit guides, or anything higher that you look to). And, I find these types of things absolutely helpful.

But, here’s the main point. Taking care of your wellbeing is an important part of life, and it can help you feel more fulfilled and content. So, don’t skip it!

Exercise, get enough sleep, and eat a balanced diet

We briefly covered these things in the section above on overall health, but they’re important enough to deserve their own section. So, let’s look more at these three things specifically.

But first, let me say this. In order to tell you how to grow as a person I had to include this, because you can’t become the best version of YOU without taking care of you.

And, exercising, getting enough sleep, and eating a balanced diet are all important for keeping a healthy lifestyle – for taking care of yourself.

Here are three ways that exercise, sleep, & diet will help you:

  • Exercise can help to reduce stress & improve physical health.
  • Getting enough sleep helps to boost energy & concentration.
  • Eating a balanced diet ensures you get the essential vitamins & nutrients your body needs to stay healthy.

So try to incorporate these three habits into your daily routine, and you’ll be on your way to a healthier you that feels better.

And when you feel better, you’re able to do more of what it takes to get where you want to go. You’ll even think better!

Do things that bring you joy & remind you of your worth

The next thing I want to share with you on how to grow as a person is about doing things that bring you joy, make you feel good, and remind you of your worth.

First, let’s talk about joyful activities.

Doing things that bring us joy is so important to our overall wellbeing, and can have a positive impact on both our mental and physical health. So, it’s important to take time for ourselves and to do activities that make us happy!

Whether it’s spending time with friends and family, meditating, watching a movie, reading a book, or going for a walk, it’s essential to prioritize activities that bring us joy.

So, take time for yourself each day! Only YOU know what actually brings you joy, so you might take some time to think about what those things are for you.

I know I’ve had times when I felt off track and had to think about what I enjoy, what makes me feel good, and purposefully make time to do these things. And, it helps!

Now, let’s talk about reminding yourself of your worth.

Reminding yourself of your own worth is important, because if you don’t understand your own value you won’t let in all the good things that want to come to you.

If you don’t get your own value, you’ll settle for less. You’ll possibly subconsciously reject the good people and things that DO come to you. You might sabotage yourself and not even realize it. Trust me, I’ve lived it and I know.

So, you simply must convince and remind yourself of your wonderful, great value! And, keep reminding and telling yourself about it until it really sinks in. Because once it does sink in, your life will never be the same again.

Once it sinks in, everything I mentioned about settling for less and so forth won’t be part of your life or holding you back anymore. (It’s a wonderful feeling!)

So, remind yourself of your worth right now by writing down (or at least listing in your mind) a list of your positive qualities and accomplishments. Focus on the amazing person that you are!

Realize that you don’t have to do ANYTHING to be deserving of anything. You are already worthy of it all. When you were put here on this earth, you were complete and just as you should be. So, see your worth and don’t worry about others who might not. That’s their loss, and those who are meant for you will get you. Most of all, don’t allow anything or anyone to get in your head and convince you that you aren’t enough just as you are!

Develop a growth mindset for your self growth journey

If you’re wanting to know how to grow as a person, you probably already have quite a growth mindset. And, this is awesome!

It’s much better than just sitting around hoping things will change all on their own, like I used to do. No, you’re realizing that you have some power over how things go in your life.

And, you do!

It’s way too easy to fall into that “this is just how it is” mindset, so stay away from that. Most of us have gone through that, because we’re not taught how to control our minds and therefore our lives. But, with the right mindset you truly CAN change things.

So, definitely let part of your self growth journey include developing a growth mindset.

Tips for how to develop a growth mindset

Developing a growth mindset for self growth is a great way to reach your goals and become the best version of yourself. And, it’ll serve you well throughout your entire life.

Be sure to realize that your abilities and qualities can be developed and improved over time. You aren’t the sum of what you were by a certain age. Nope. You’re a creative being that is capable of transforming and growing!

To get started developing a growth mindset, use these tips:

  • Focus on challenging yourself and developing your skills in areas that you’re interested in.
  • Be open to feedback and look for ways to learn from your mistakes.
  • Practice gratitude and self-compassion, as it’ll help you on your growth journey.
  • Finally, have patience and keep in mind that growth doesn’t happen overnight.

With consistent effort, dedication, and the right mindset, you can find success and reach your goals. In fact, with this combination you can do anything.

Just remember that learning how to grow as a person MUST include working on your mindset – and some would even say that working on the mindset, or your thinking, is most important!

Be open to feedback and constructive criticism

Constructive criticism and feedback are essential for personal growth at times, even if it isn’t the funnest part of the growth process. So, try to be open to it and to think of the benefits of it.

Try to think like this about constructive criticism (that’s helpful):

  • Listening to and considering other people’s positive opinions can help me identify areas where I can improve and develop.
  • I’m open to hearing and learning from others and am willing to take their advice and make changes where needed (when it’s helpful to me).

With that being said, try to surround yourself with people who motivate and inspire you. Having supportive, positive relationships can help you stay motivated to reach your goals!

How to grow as a person by getting out of your comfort zone

Now, let’s talk about how to grow as a person by getting out of your comfort zone a little.

Getting out of your comfort zone really is great for self growth! And though it seems hard at first, it’s like anything else you’ve ever learned and mastered before. Once you’re comfortable with it, it feels great and you’re on to learning the next thing.

So to do this, start small by trying something new each day. This could be something as simple as trying a new food, talking to someone you don’t know, or exploring a new hobby.

As you get more comfortable with these small changes, you can move onto bigger ones, such as taking a trip alone, making a new friend, or volunteering in your community.

As you challenge yourself, you’ll gain new skills, experiences, and perspectives that’ll help you grow as a person!

Take risks while not being afraid to fail

Taking risks and not being afraid of failure is important. I feel that in general we’re taught not to take risks, but I also feel that this isn’t always good.

If we never take risks, like go for that far out business idea, we absolutely stand no chance at becoming all that we’re capable of being – doing all that we’re capable of doing.

But, it takes getting out of your comfort zone – like we discussed in the last section.

Just because things feel comfortable to us doesn’t mean they’re the only things for us. Sometimes we’re meant to spread our wings and fly.

It can be helpful to not be afraid of failure, as it’ll allow you to push yourself to reach higher than you might have otherwise. Here are some more ways that taking risks and not fearing failure can help:

  • By taking risks, you can expand your knowledge and experience in areas that you may not have explored otherwise.
  • Not being afraid to fail helps you to take calculated risks, learn from your mistakes, and become more resilient.
  • Taking risks and not being afraid of failure can also help you develop important skills like problem-solving, communication, and creativity.
  • It can also help you gain the courage and confidence to take on bigger challenges in the future.
  • Finally, taking risks and not being afraid to fail can open up new opportunities and provide valuable insight into how to become successful.

So although you don’t want to be unwise, you also don’t want to never take a chance on things or be the person that has something negative to say about everything.

I recently heard about the “what if” game (can’t remember where from). But, with it you allow yourself to ask “what if” when you start getting negative and nervous about something.

For example, if you’re worried about starting a new business opportunity because of all the reasons it could fail, you ask “what if it works, what if it’s the best thing that ever happened to me” and so on.

Try it! And, let me know what kind of what if questions you come up with.

Reflect on your progress & celebrate your successes

If you’re wanting to know how to grow as a person and become who you want to be, you’re ambitious.

You have dreams for your life and things that you’d like to do or to make happen. But, don’t forget to reflect on your progress along the way and to also celebrate your successes along the way!

Trust me, if you don’t do this you risk being susceptible to burn out. So, take care of yourself and celebrate yourself in this way.

You don’t have to wait until you reach that biggest goal that you have to celebrate or give yourself a pat on the back. Recognize how far you’ve come, along the way. Be your own and your biggest cheerleader, and you’ll go even farther!

How to grow as a person while being kind to YOU

Now, all of this that we’ve talked about is great. And, if you’ve read this far I think you’re dedicated to your self and awesome (to be learning for your growth)!

But, it can be a lot to seriously work on yourself and on your life. I know, I’ve done it and continue to do it. And, it’s totally worth it! I just don’t want you to forget to be kind and patient with yourself along the way.

When you’re learning how to grow as a person and become who you want to be, it may be easy to get frustrated with yourself at times. You might think, “Why am I not there yet. I’ve worked so hard!”

But, remember that it takes times. And, it’s mostly about the journey anyway. You’re growing and learning so much with each step along the way toward what you want. So, nothing’s wasted.

This is SO important to remember! I know you want to be there or have that life already. Trust me, I know. But as long as you keep putting one step in front of the other, you’re going to get there. The odds are in your favor! So, try to trust the process.

Be kind to YOU, and be patient with yourself. And know that anyone who intentionally sets out to improve themselves and their lives already deserves an award, because not everyone seriously does it.
