With all the chaos going on in the world right now and all the stress this brings people, I wanted to talk about meditation. Specifically, I want to discuss how meditation helps and provide a resource to learn how to do meditation.

Also, I ‘m going to include a chapter sample of a book called Meditation that I think you will benefit from and enjoy. This is a gift from me to you, and I hope it helps with stress relief!

Before learning how to do meditation, many people want to know how meditation helps. One common reason to use meditation is to reduce stress and anxiety, but meditation has many benefits that can help you. If you need help with relaxation, try meditation.

For a few minutes, reflect on what Buddha said thousands of years ago. You will be quite amazed to realize that your life is the product of your thoughts, imagination, and feelings.

If you feel stressed and are far from living a well-rounded life, then that is primarily because you focus too much on stressful things.

Yes, there are scores of things beyond our reach and control, because external factors associated with the environment cannot always be manipulated.

That said, you do have an amazingly powerful tool within your control – your mind.

According to Buddhism, the only effectual antidote to all our fears, apprehensions, anxieties, sorrows, chaos, and troubles is the ability to control our state of mind and change the way we perceive things. And the best way to tame/control the mind is through meditation.

Let me explain.

Digging Deeper Into the Magic of Meditation – Part 2 of Meditation Book Chapter

Meditation helps transform your state of mind and bring clarity, stability, positivity, and serenity to the way you think, feel, perceive and believe in things.

Over the course of a day, on average, we experience around 50,000 thoughts, most of which relate to either our past or future. Since we have a lot to think about and as all the thoughts are mostly jumbled up, we have difficulty in identifying our genuine and important thoughts.

Through meditation, we can learn the art of slowing down the rate at which thoughts enter our minds. We can improve our ability to pick important thoughts and concentrate on them one by one, instead of letting everything become jumbled up.

Also, when you choose one thought over another you keep the power of focusing on different thoughts to yourself, instead of allowing your thoughts to control you.

When you realize a certain feeling or thought isn’t beneficial you replace it with something more positive, something which can improve your state of mind.

Before meditation you would have just kept thinking on that very thought and would have allowed it to wreak havoc in your mind.

Meditation changes things by working on your different brainwaves.

More specifically, with meditation, you are able to move from high frequency brainwaves to lower ones by activating different centers in your brain that produce different effects in your body (including calmness, ability to think rationally, healthy heart, stability in blood pressure, and improved metabolism)

How Meditation Works – Part 3 for How Meditation Helps & How to Do Meditation

To understand how meditation works, it is important that you start by understanding the different brain waves that I mentioned above.

Our brain functions in 5 brainwaves, each of which has a certain role to play in our healthy functioning and well-being. The 5 brainwave categories include:

Gamma State

Gamma State: These brainwaves have frequency ranging between 30Hz and 100Hz and promote a state of active learning and hyperactivity in your brain.

This state is important for moments when you have to pick and retain information, but an overstimulated gamma state leads to anxiety and behavioral issues.

Beta State

Beta State: This tends to be our ‘default’ brainwave. In fact, we are mostly operating within this brainwave for the major part of the day and its frequency ranges between 13Hz and 30Hz.

It’s the state of thinking mind. It helps you in assessing, planning, categorizing and analytical thinking. It is quite an important state, but if you keep functioning in it, you experience a racing mind and cannot focus on things better or calm down.

Alpha State

Alpha State: This is the state when the brainwaves start slowing down. This state operates in a frequency range between 9Hz and 13Hz and promotes a state of peacefulness and calmness inside you. A stroll in the park or a relaxing yoga class causes your brain to operate within this brainwave. This is when your thoughts start to slow down so you can focus better on them.

Theta State

Theta State: This brainwave state has a frequency ranging between 4Hz and 8Hz and our brain functions in it when we start meditating regularly. This is when our thinking mind transitions into the visual/meditative mind and we shift from a state of active thinking to that of deep realization and awareness.

When you meditate regularly, you encourage your brain to function in this state whenever you want.

Delta State

Delta State: This brainwave state is the slowest of the 5 and operates within a frequency range of 1 Hz to 3 Hz. Tibetan monks with decades of meditation experience function in this state which is an extremely wakened and alert phase wherein you are aware of everything that happens inside and outside of you.

Your brain also experiences the delta state when you are in deep sleep.

I know you might be thinking that you only need the delta state to combat stress, anxiety and live a peaceful life but the truth is each of these brainwave states is important for our proper and healthy functioning.

Think about it; if our brain is mostly operating within the gamma or beta states, our lives are a lot more chaotic and we feel stressed more often. And if the brain functions within the theta or alpha states, we won’t be able to actively think when required.

Meditation helps regulate the different parts of the brain involved in these states, so you experience each state when required and in its active state.

This improves your brain health and cognition, and helps you become more mindful.

More Reasons to Meditate – Final Part of This Book Chapter

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Studies show that meditation helps regulate stress by stabilizing the production of the cortisol hormone, the stress-triggering hormone. The less cortisol that’s within your bloodstream, the less you feel stressed.

In addition, meditation can improve the production of feel good hormones in your body such as serotonin and dopamine, something which improves your mood.

Moreover, through meditation it becomes easier for you to let go of the past and it’s pains, which naturally reduces stress.

Since it helps improve focus on the present, this means you can be less focused on what could go wrong. This in turn can calm down your anxious nerves and help manage panic attacks

Improves Emotional Intelligence and Well-Being

Different studies have shown that having high emotional intelligence (the ability to be aware of and manage your emotions and those of others) is the key to living a good, successful life.

If you practice meditation, you can gain self-awareness and become more mindful. This can greatly help build your emotional intelligence since you won’t be jumping into conclusions without taking a moment to just be present.

Combats Depression

Part of meditation entails replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts.

This essentially means that by practicing meditation, you start becoming more deliberate about making positive thoughts take center stage in your life.

This can improve your self-image and self-esteem, which can in turn help you to combat depression better.

Improves Cognition, Focus, and Creativity

According to a study conducted by Katherine MacLean from The University of California, meditation can improve your overall cognition, your ability to focus on one thing for long, and your creative capacities.

This is possible due to meditation improving the functioning of the brain parts associated with these tasks and thickening the prefrontal cortex in your brain.

This can translate to you performing better in different tasks, especially those associated with information processing, information retention, and innovative thinking.

Improves Resilience and Strength

Through meditation, you can improve the functioning of the parts of brain associated with strength, resilience, and the ability to feel pain, which essentially translates to increased strength, resilience, and pain threshold.

Improves Physical Health and Well-Being

According to the findings of different studies, meditation does help:

  • reduce inflammatory disorders
  • lower high blood pressure
  • improve heart health
  • reduce the risk of developing arthritis
  • overcome diabetes
  • & strengthen your immune system so you can ward off diseases easily and effectively

Honestly, these aren’t all the goodies that come with meditation. There are many others (which you can read from the resources found in the book)!
